The Kent Scouts Ghana 2026 Expedition Team has returned to the United Kingdom today after completing an inspiring and impactful expedition in Ghana, combining community service, educational support and international Scouting friendship. During their time in Ghana, the team worked alongside staff and students at Abutia Rhema School, contributing to a construction programme aimed at improving the safety and security of the school environment. The project provided valuable support to the school community while giving young people from Kent the opportunity to develop practical skills and experience the positive impact of international volunteering. In addition to the construction work, expedition members delivered a series of summer school lessons, supporting teachers and pupils through engaging, play-based learning activities. Sessions included the development of new skills such as basic first aid, helping to build confidence, resilience and practical knowledge among the students. Explorers and Network Scouts alongside Leaders also helped to deliver art classes, story time, games and PE lessons, providing stimulating and exciting experiences for the local Ghanaian children. A highlight of the expedition was the opportunity to strengthen international Scouting ties through meetings with members of the Ghana Scouts Association. The Kent contingent was honoured to meet the Chief Commissioner of the Ghana Scouts Association, Mr Hilary Awuzi, and learn more about the important role Scouting plays in communities across Ghana. The team also spent time with Mr Justice Edem, Scout Leader, and his Venture and Rover Scouts from Hoehoe, and Mr Holly Bodi, Scout Leader from Accra, and a number of his Rover Scouts and Scout Leaders learning songs and games together. As a token of their appreciation, the Kent Scouts performed their Scouts Against Malaria play, which the Ghanaian Scouts hope to adopt and use to help tackle malaria as a community. The Kent continent also delivered 30 bugs nets to the Ghanaian Scouts to be given out to those in need. As a symbol of friendship and shared Scouting values, members of the Kent Scouts Ghana 2026 Expedition Team were presented with traditional Kente cloth neckers by Ghanaian Scouts and a compliation of photos from all 3 expeditions to Ghana. The presentation reflected the warm welcome received throughout the visit and the lasting connections formed between young people and volunteers from both countries. The expedition has provided participants with unforgettable experiences, a deeper understanding of global citizenship and a renewed appreciation for the power of Scouting to bring people together across cultures and continents. Expedition Leader Lydia said: "This expedition has been an incredible journey of service, learning and friendship. We are immensely proud of the work completed at Abutia Rhema School and grateful for the hospitality shown to us by the Ghanaian people and the Ghana Scouts Association. The friendships formed and lessons learned will stay with our young people for many years to come."
